Jesse Jacobs was a long time gardener before he went into business with “Outrageous Edibles and Bedibles”, where he and his crew now produce high quality bedding plants, vegetable starters and herbs. He knows the difference in flavour and the satisfaction of growing your own food, and encourages others to do the same.
A visit to Jesse’s home in the summer is a clear indication that he still loves to grow a garden. But more importantly, it gives him a chance to get to know the characteristics of the bedding plants, vegetable starters, and herbs that he grows for sale in his greenhouses.
Although he is committed to producing a wide variety of pesticide free “Vegstarters”, Jesse will readily admit to a passion for the “Unforgettables” series of heirloom tomatoes. Outrageous Edibles and Bedibles has been working with Eagle Ridge Seed Company, and the Seed Sanctuary on Salt Spring Island for the past six years to reintroduce heirloom varieties of tomatoes, eggplants and peppers to local growers. These heirloom species are open pollinated, have evolved naturally, and have superior flavour! There are many different varieties, which are tested and grown here in BC, so they are noted for flavour but also for local adaptability. Jesse is growing over 50 varieties of tomato plants this season, and 28 of these varieties are the heirloom “Unforgettables”!
Outrageous Edibles and Bedibles also grows a large selection of 6 PAK “Vegstarters”. Vegetable starters allow for a shorter time between planting and harvesting and they have an established root mass, so they are strong and vigorous when planted in the garden. And don’t forget, variety is the spice of life! Rather than having to purchase a whole seed package just to try a new flavour of vegetable, you can choose several different varieties of “vegstarters”. You’ll be able to grow a diverse selection of vegetables all season long!
